There are few things in this life as heartbreaking as seeing animals suffer. It’s why, together, we award millions of dollars to animal shelters every year whilst simultaneously lavishing our own pets with an outrageous number of chew toys, snacks, and walks.
We treat our furry friends like they are truly part of the household. For parents, they become an additional child, and for kids, they become a sibling – minus the feuds over who’ll ride shotgun, the physical fights over the biggest slice of chocolate cake (dogs are allergic) and the outbursts thrown during a long walk, something a dog would never complain about.
When people part with their pooches, it can be challenging to figure out what possessed them to do such a thing. A probable theory is that they simply didn’t care enough or that they were immature and obtained a dog despite not being equipped to give it the proper care it needed.
Dragged into the Animal Shelter
This was the conclusion that Ann Flores came to when she observed two different women drag their dogs to an animal shelter. Evidently, from the views that Flores was able to take on her camera, the dogs perceived that they were about to be abandoned.
This prompted them to protest in the parking lot as their determined owners struggled to drag them through the doors of Harris County Animal Shelter in Houston, Texas.
“Please don’t take me in here”
Determined to abandon their dog at the shelter, the women eventually quit in picking them up and hauling them into the building. Recalling the heartbreaking scene she watched, Flores told The Dodo: “[One of the dogs] laid on his back and just curled over. It was like he was saying, ‘Please don’t take me in here’.”
“[The owners] were both dragging, but the dogs wouldn’t budge,” Flores stated. “They had to pick them up because they just would not move. They would not walk in there.”
“They didn’t care. They were just chuckling and giggling because the dogs wouldn’t budge. To them, it was just like tossing rubbish away. There was no guilt, nothing,” Flores adds hauntingly.
Time was their Enemy
Heartbroken by what she’d watched, Flores sent the unpleasant footage to Harris County Animal Volunteers who work to rehome dogs and cats from the shelter.
With limited time to spare the dog’s lives – the animal shelter was crowded and as a result, the bewildered canines would be dealing with euthanasia in just a few days – the charity sent out a petition for any kindhearted pet lovers to step forward and adopt Truman and Mandi, as they were thereafter called.
Caring Efforts Paid Off
Thankfully, their cry for help didn’t stumble on deaf ears for both Truman and Mandi would find loving new homes where they are now being definitely spoiled.
Whilst they may have landed on all four paws, the dogs still have a great journey to go before they are totally free of their dreadful past.
But for now, they are loving their freedom, keenly conscious of how close they got to an unfortunate fate that day when their owners gave them up.

There are those who cannot believe the owner’s behavior…
…and those who sympathize with them over what must have been a very difficult decision…
What side do you sway to? Do you think the owners are to blame? Or do you think they did the most responsible thing they could do?
